Hello Everyone,

I'm getting a prep-group together for the National Open. Last time 18 teams contributed a total of 36 briefs for the NC prep group and about 200 pages of evidence if I remember correctly, so it can be a very valuable resource.

Each team will be assigned two briefs (obtained from the National caselist) to write before the tournament (early-birds get to volunteer, so sign-up soon!). These briefs shall be distributed among all participants in the prep group. The case topics will be selected from the national case list, as well as any suggestions or requests people may have. The briefs will be submitted by midnight EST on Sunday, January 24 and will be sent out the following Morning.

You can join at any time, but the early birds get to choose what they want to write on and also will have more time to research (which = less pressure ;)).

The Guidelines for the briefs:
-Must be *at least* 5 pages or (preferably) 10+ cards, not including separate page for the TOC
-Briefs should have page numbers (please send them as PDF documents if possible)
-Must include complete citations (e.g. author, credentials, date, publication, url, researcher's initials, etc.)
-Must include at least one disadvantage

Please only include arguments that you would actually run in round. No one wants a brief filled with lame arguments. :P Also, make the arguments diverse (not one argument proving a point with a dozen isolated incidents that "prove" it).

If you are interested, pm or e-mail me (johnmarkporter@earthlink.net) and I will give you access to the google document which has the assignments.

I emailed you, but to be clear, I'd like to join (just as soon as I check with my partner).

Is anyone planning on running one of these this year?

I have the same question. My partner and I would be interested if someone did start a group.

it's not going to happen if everyone is willing to be a passenger but no one takes the wheel ;) :D .

It's relatively easy to get done and coordinate. Someone write up the prerequisites (card count, include a DA, or whatever), put together a google doc with all the cases that you want briefed, and assign a team a case and share it with everyone. Keep a running tally of the briefs as they come in, know who has finished their briefs and who hasn't. Put the briefs in a folder that you divide into sections of 10 or 20 briefs that are divided by the order that they came in (You don't want to arrange the briefs alphabetically and then get a last minute entry by a new team and then have to figure out where the brief went).

I would consider raising the standards a bit from last year perhaps. Skim the briefs if you're the coordinator, but if you don't read each one through card to card it's fine. If there's an issue with a brief that someone picks up, e-mail the team and have them fix their problem. Out of nearly 50 teams and 100 briefs that I've coordinated in the past, I still only saw one or two instances of an incident occurring.

Someone just has to step up and take initiative for it. Marina and myself didn't have a huge problem taking it on in the past.

As it is, it still seems a bit early for you to get started. Usually it was about three weeks ahead of time that we did it.
