So the Speech rules for extemp came out yesterday, and NCFCA now has electronic extemp.

The rules regarding it are on Part nine of Extemp rules.

Any thoughts from NCFCA extempers? Also, if you are in Stoa and have already done it, has it worked well?

I personally love this. No more killing trees!! And you don' have to be a part of a club to get a lot of articles either. :)

Are you saying our club isn't good enough for you...... :| :P jk It should work out our to save on printing costs and whatnot.

Personally, I love electronic extemp. I think it's funny that you can't plug your laptop in in the prep room... there'll be laptops plugged in to every available more or less unobtrusively located hall outlet between rounds. But I'm very happy for you guys. I know in Stoa some people switched back to paper, but I don't get it. Not only does electronic save a significant amount of time and money, you never have to worry about someone having pulled the file you need... you've got your own copy. And Adobe's multi-doc search functionality made my life much easier on several occasions.

My transition to electronic extemp has been a very rewarding and pleasant one. I concur with the others on this thread touting its manifold advantages. Electronic extemp is great for both small and large clubs.

The only caution I would have is to not be overly dependent on electronic extemp. There's no reason to not do both paper and electronic, because you might lose your computer, spill your Starbucks mocha frappuccino on it, or lose your boxes in transit (among other things). No harm is done if you have the hard copy paper backup to fall back on. Besides, some prospective extempers might not have their own laptop, so doing paper will encourage them to join and not feel like they HAVE to invest money into getting a new laptop if they don't really want to. But if you decide due to time, cost, and workability reasons to only do electronic, then that's fine - do what is best for you and your club. :)
