There are certain issues that come up repeatedly in this forum. For example, people often wonder how to download a picture from the internet, create a photobucket account, upload it, and use it as their avatar.

If anyone wants to tackle a common question and write a good, thorough answer for it, I will add it to this thread, which is stickied.

How to get your URLs to come out as custom text:
(Courtesy of BennyBoy286)

How do you get your URLs into nice neat links?
This example is "google":

1. Copy & paste your URL:

Code:
www.google.com

2. Highlight it and click the "URL" button on your tool bar:

Code:
[url]www.google.com[/url]

3. Make the first bracket ([url]) look like this: [url= :

Code:
[url=www.google.com[/url]

4. Change the last bracket from this: [/url] to this: ][/url] :

Code:
[url=www.google.com][/url]

Now write what you want the link to say between the two next to last brackets:

Code:
[url=www.google.com]Google[/url]

And your link will come out like this: Google

Dear members of HSD,

How to create an avatar
1. Begin by finding an image online, a beneficial recourse is Google Images.
2. For PC users right now click the image you wish to be your avatar, click on properties, then copy 'the image URL.' For mac users, right mouse click your desired image, and click 'copy image address' which will automatically copy it for you.
3. Now we'll go to HSD where at the home page (if logged in) user control panel on the top right side of the page.
4. Once there, click on profile under the options box, on the left side of the screen.
5. Click on edit avatar located within the profile box. While there, you will see an empty horizontal white box with the words Link off-site: to the left of it, you will paste the URL of your image there.
6. Finally, you will set your avatars dimensions, located directly underneath the link off-site box. You must set the dimensions within 150x150, no higher.

How to create a signature
1. On the home page of HSD click on user control panel on the top right side of the page.
2. Now click on profile located in the options box on the left side of the page.
3. Finally you'll click on edit signature and you can type what you wish in the text box and press submit.

How to add an image to a post
1. The first step is the same as the first and second step in, 'How to make an Avatar.' Which makes it quite basic at this point.
2. Now let's go to the desired thread in which you want to post an image. There you will click post reply.
3. As you will be able to see above the text box, there are buttons, which contain, bold, italics, underline, quote, etc. On that top line of buttons you will see one titled Img click that and paste your image URL within the boxes that appear.

If my image wont load....
1. Sometimes you will attempt to add an avatar or image in a post, and it will not appear. This is due to a corrupt image file or simply not compatible with our site. Never to worry! All you must do is upload it to a photo to a photo sharing site. Such as Photobucket or [img=www.shutterfly.com]Shutterlfy[/img] (I know some may use snapfish but I find the images don't work as well.)
2. Find the image you wish to use or post, right mouse click it and press 'Save image as.'
3. Now you will save it to your desktop, or any file you wish it to be on your computer.
4. Generally I use photobucket, because it is most dependable. So, if you do not have an account you'll want to register, (it's free!) Now, at the homepage click on my albums on the top toolbar, there will be a drop down menu where you will click on albums & uploads
5. Once there click on the blue button, which says choose files You will find the image you saved onto your computer and then click 'select.'
6. It will take a few seconds to upload, once done, you may right mouse click your image and copy the URL. After this, you can finish by following the instructions in how to make an avatar or how to post a picture in a thread.

If you have anymore questions regarding how to do something on this forum feel free to pm me, and please do not post on this thread, as it was not created for discussion but for learning.

Thanks,
~ Passepartout

I would like to add two comments:

(1) Make sure you do not use copyrighted images.
(2) Make sure you always host your own avatar (via Photobucket, for example), rather than steal bandwidth from others.

what if we are too young to have a photobucket account? (limit, 14)
is it better to lie to the photo-bucket registration?

In that case, I think the best option would be to have a parent or friend set up a photobucket account, upload the image you want to use, and give you the URL for it. I would be happy to register a photobucket account for HSD avatars if that is helpful to people, but I suggest you ask a parent or friend first. :)

If you wanted to display something like this:

Here's Tastiness!

the code would look like this:

Code:
[url=http://www.bobsfrenchfries.com/]Here's Tastiness![/url]

where you put the text to be displayed in between the BBCode tags and place the URL in the beginning tag like so:

Code:
[url=http://yoururlhere.com/]

Hiding Text

This is how you hide text.

Code:
[hide="What appears regularly"]What You want hidden[/hide]

comes out like this:

What appears regularly
What You want hidden

How do you get a moving avatar? I saw this youtube vid that I wanted as my avy, but when I put it as my avy, it said that it was an invalid url. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6eqpmTLOtI&feature=channel

It needs to be a .gif file.
You can make your own gif here.

ok...don't know if this is a stupid question or not...but I was wondering where I can post bizarre things that have happened to me during a round. I know there's a thread for bizarre judges comments...but what about experiences? I don't really want to start a new thread if there's already one out there, but I'm difficulty finding the right one.

so,
thanks,

Noob

There's this thread for bizarre comments made by your opponent during the round.

That's all I could find.

Just keep in mind that starting a new thread and having it locked isn't a crime. In other words, if you've searched for a thread on a topic and couldn't find one, you can consider yourself justified in starting a new one.

Just FYI, if you create a topic for a question, there's no reason to post it on here, too. :)

Guys, I'd really appreciate it if we didn't start asking questions and giving 'ahh I see, thank you' responses. This is not what this thread was created for. It is simply for the use of reading what mods and myself have posted for your knowledge.

If you do have any questions pertaining anything on this forum people pm someone and ask them, then if it is a problem others are having I will add it onto the post of commonly asked questions.

Thanks,
-- Passepartout
