Dear HSD users,

There has been a downward trend recently that has taken hold of Silly Stuff. Speaking on behalf of all the moderators and staff of HSD, we believe that this trend has taken that particular section of EE away from its original purpose. I realize what implications the name "Silly Stuff" may have, but none of them allow for content that is lacking in substance. It is our belief that it is perfectly possible to be "silly" and yet have something of substance to say at the same time. But instead of speaking in vague terms, I have attempted to lay out for everyone what the moderators have agreed upon to be the criteria, if you will, for posting in Silly Stuff.

  • No threads which encourage one-word or one-liner responses (Example: the word association thread.)
  • No threads which encourage mechanical responses (Example: In the counting thread, there is precisely one response you can make to the post before you. No creativity was required or even allowed.)
  • If a thread is based around a question, it should be an open-ended question. If the entirety of a thread's content could be summed up in a simple poll tacked onto the thread, then the thread doesn't need to exist. (Example: "How tall are you?" is not something you can be creative with. There is a single, definite answer.)

Things we are looking for:

  • Creativity
  • Entertainment
  • Discursiveness
  • Ingenuity

Yes, ingenuity. The recent threads started by Green Tea and McCabius (and the threads that were spawned as a result of them) will serve as perfect examples of what should not be found in Silly Stuff -- threads that require no amount of thought or creativity from those who are participating (and, yes, for those wondering: the threads were sarcastic threads intended to prove how degraded and pointless most of the forum has become. Obviously, due to the amount of participation, they failed to serve such a purpose.) Games such as Mafia and Incognito are perfectly acceptable. A thread calling for the discussion of characters from Middle Earth is perfectly acceptable. Threads that require mechanical responses and a lack of the aforementioned criteria (creativity, ingenuity, etc.) are not.

This announcement was not created to simply serve as a reminder to the users of HSD what the Silly Stuff forum is about. It is also a warning. The moderators are armed and ready to make sure that Silly Stuff no longer remains a worthless (yes, worthless) forum consisting of nothing other than dead threads requiring lifeless responses. We want it to be vibrant, alive, and a place where one's mind can actually become engaged.

Well, enough has been said. I would strongly encourage each of you to read every word of this (assuming you haven't already, in which case I would advise it even stronger. But it would still be a good idea to re-cap.) The revolution has begun. God willing, each and every one of you will surivive it and emerge a better, more engaged and challenged human being. ;)

Wow. We needed this.

One question though. Instead of cluttering Silly Stuff with locked threads, can the locked threads be moved to the archive?

That is an excellent question, and one that I was going to clarify by editing the OP. It looks as though we will either be moving them to the archive or deleting them altogether.

Thank you so much, Steven. (And all the rest of the mods.) I knew this was coming soon, considering the lack in quality in Silly Stuff threads. And, just for the record, I totally caught onto the topics Josh and Caleb made. ;)

I would ask that the threads be archived instead of deleted, though. I can become nostalgic at times, and reading old threads always treats that.

Can the mods start archiving every locked EE thread? It'll keep those boards nice and clean :D

Haha, I knew something was up with those totally pointless threads started by MODS, no less....

Yes, plz do archive them *sniff* as Revgirl said....

Thanks you mods though :D

Heyyyy, you can't discredit all the clever ways we represented the numbers in that thread. : P

Yeah, I'm really going to miss watching everyone count to 1000. I would have a tough time coping if I couldn't go back and reread that thread for old times' sake. :P

That wasn't a thread. It was a sorry excuse for something worth posting on. :P

My thread, on the other hand, was a real conversational gem.

Certainly. At least people could use their letter to begin a legitimate sentence.

I'll have it be known that my counting thread was a joke. Honestly, I think the most useful of the three-four threads tht was started then was definitely the beer bottles thread. ;)

I think that was Josh and Caleb's way of spicing things up. At any rate I'm glad at what the moderators have done with SS, it was definitely getting out of hand. Thanks, Steven.

as an unofficial addendum to the [very worth and awesome] points bigglesworth made, i challenge all of you to make the effort not to just post one-line responses anymore.

i remember a time when SS was so tightly policed that one-line posts would be deleted.
:waggles cane:
we won't go to that extent this time, i don't think, but make the effort to do more than "haha this topic is awesome" :post:

Also, as a general announcement: posts made for the sole purpose of correcting someone's grammar will be promptly deleted without grace. :D

Hmmmm... I do think the new rules for Silly Stuff are a good idea.

Also, I'd just like to point out that the previous two posts, both by mods, were one-liners. ;)
