A brief reminder to all members of HSD:
This web site's primary audience is homeschooled, Christian debaters who are in high school. While people of all types are welcome on this site, many of the board policies reflect the importance of this core group. One of those policies is our policy regarding language. This board does not permit the usage of inappropriate language (aka, "swear words," "cuss words," etc.). In part, this is because many in our core audience find such language offensive. Additionally, a permissive approach to such language often detracts from the capacity to have intelligent, friendly, and productive conversations on an internet forum such as this one.
Nevertheless, sometimes users choose to employ such language, perhaps out of frustration, ignorance of board policies, or a momentary lapse in judgment. We have a wonderful staff of moderators who constantly monitor the site and remove such language very quickly when it appears. We are all thankful for their hard work and dedication.
We have also enabled a "word censor" feature on this site. When certain inappropriate words are entered, the word censor automatically replaces them with "[censored]". This allows inappropriate language to be screened from the moment it is posted, even before moderators are able to find it.The existence of word filters does not give any user of HSD the license to use inappropriate language.
Not every word can be filtered, for some words have legitimate uses alongside illegitimate ones. The word censors are only in place to assist the moderators; they are not there to allow users to follow the technical board policies while breaking them in spirit.
- Deliberately undermining the word filters by posting vulgar things in ways the filters will not catch is considered a serious infraction of the policies that allow this community to flourish and will not be tolerated.
- Thinly veiled vulgarities are considered attempts to circumvent the word filters (for example, replacing a single letter of a curse word with an "*" such that it is obvious to all what you intend).
- While it is understandable that certain users may occasionally lapse into inappropriate language (especially if such language is familiar and unoffensive within their communities), users who make a habit of doing so -- whether their vulgarities are automatically censored or not -- are also in violation of board policies and will have to adjust their approach to posting.
- If you have any questions concerning whether a specific word is allowed, etc., please send me or a member of "The Family" a private message (PM).
