Dear HSD Users,

When Isaiah McPeak (Isaiah) transfered HSD to me in May of 2005 he also transferred the monthly bill to me. For the last 28 months, I have been paying $8.95/month. Just last week I had to renew our domain name (the registration of "www.homeschooldebate.com"), for another $60. All in all, the cost of keeping up HSD for the last two years has come out to be $310.60.

Usually I'm quite financially secure and the simple costs of keeping up the site is a drop in the bucket. However, I'm entering college this fall and am currently over $1000 short of what I need to finish out the year. Basically, if I don't make $1000+ before the spring, I'll have to drop out of school. If you take that into consideration, every $8.95 makes a big difference.

I do not want to request donations or charge for any basic functions. In fact, every single piece of the forum will remain free and available to all. What I would like to offer is that with a $5 donation, you will receive an HSD email address.

The details of the email address:

    *yourchoice@homeschooldebate.com
    *15 Megabytes of space.
*Pop3 and IMAP access from any email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, Eudora, etc).
*Forwarding capabilities to any other email address.

I'm sure there are lots of other things that the email address will do, but I really don't know what to list. If you have any questions about the email addresses, just ask.

I do not want to make a profit from your charity or free-spirit. I will keep a record of every dollar I make here in this thread.

As far as payment goes, you can mail me a check or send me a transaction on Paypal. If you email me at: nick@homeschooldebate.com I can give you my address or answer any other specific questions you might have.

If you have any questions as to my motives, specifics, or anything else. Post here and I'll answer it for you. Let me know what ya'll might want or expect from this transaction.

Sincerely,
Nick

Is the $5. donation a one-time thing, or a monthly donation? (Either way, it sounds like a great deal for us, and a good way to help support the site.)

I'm not as up on website building/hosting as I should be, so pardon my ignorance...does the 15 MB mean hosting of a website, or hosting of files? In other words, would I be able to create a website in that space?

I knew I forgot something. That would be $5/year.

That would simply be an email account. You could send and receive emails with an address of something like mailto:Nick@homeschooldebate.com.

I would love to offer more space for the addresses, but we only have 600 MB of server space that is unused. We're getting close to not having any left and I don't want to have to foot a huge bill because we went over on space usage. If I get enough donations, I may very well upgrade our server, but for now it has to remain small.

Your best bet will be to set up the HSD email address to come into Outlook, Thunderbird, or another mail client. So you'd be able to have the mailto:soandso@homeschooldebate.com, but you would have practically unlimited space (on your harddrive).

For now, I'm not too sure on how to set up a web-based email client, but if someone knows, I'd love to hear how to go about it.

Nick

So far I have received a Paypal of $85 and checks totaling $90. Some more people have also pledged money, but I have not yet received it.

All in all, $175.

Thanks to all of you.

Whoa. Hold on! Your paying $60 for domain renewal????? Try buying it from another domain seller such as www.1and1.com you can buy domains there for about $7/year, and renewal is a LOT less than $60!!! (it's something like $7-$15)

Also you might want to start hosting with a different company, www.1dollar-webhosting.com is what I use, and their most expensive package is $5.00/month and you get 100GB space, 1TB of monthly transfer, MySQL and PHP. For full details take a look for your self.

Just wanted to let you know.

I doubt it, since the site is under new ownership.

Isn't the site owned by Green Tea now?

I have no idea; presumably he will respond to this when he gets back and sees it.

I would certainly appreciate help running the site. I currently do so entirely at my own expense. While that expense is not extreme, I am a college student and do not have infinite resources at my disposal.

If anyone appreciates this site and community and wishes to help me keep it running, I would be glad of small contributions ($5 - $20). All funds, of course, would go directly toward the site operation. Please contact me via PM if you would be willing to do this.

woah wait! your paying
$8/mo...that's quite expensive for a domain.

I wish I could help financially, but I am unable.
