Having debate withdrawals after NITOC? Want to leave a lasting mark on the homeschool speech and debate community? Try Wikiathon!

Wikiathon is a one-week challenge to improve the HSD wiki. Ultimately, we want the wiki to become a definitive resource for the broader homeschool debate community (and, in the process, a force for revitalizing HSD.) We have the perfect combination of technology, users, and knowledge to actually accomplish that. But to succeed, we need a critical mass of content. That's where you come in.

The Challenge
Once a day for a week, write a new article on the HSD Wiki, or expand a stub that already exists into a more complete article. Complete the challenge, and you win Eternal Fame and Glory. (Also, you get to put the snazzy banner at the top of this post on your wiki userpage, so you can bask in the honor and respect of your peers. Research shows that flashing a Wikiathon winner's banner will cause up to 78% of opponents to forfeit the round rather than face your awesomeness. *Not intended to be a factual statement.)

Pretty much anything goes, as long as it's vaguely speech-and-debate related. Interp rules. An explanation of your favorite flowing system. A collection of links to tournament videos. Your club. Yourself, if you want. Go wild! Imagine - five years from now, a random coach in Minnesota could be linking to an article you created as the definitive explanation of something.

(This really isn't hard, by the way. It's just one article a day, and even if it's terrible, that just gives other people an incentive to fix it and improve the wiki further. Win-win!)

Want to give it a shot?
Wikiathon starts this Sunday, June 2nd, and runs through Saturday, June 8st. If you're up for trying the challenge - even if you're not sure you'll succeed - just reply to this post. (You can still help out if you don't post, but you won't win Eternal Fame and Glory if you succeed.)

Bonus challenges, just for fun
Gold Tier Challenge: Complete at least two articles per day, and you'll receive a special Gold Banner of Awesomeness (and even more Eternal Fame and Glory.)
Team Challenge: You can take the challenge as a team with one or more other people. If all of you succeed, you'll get a special award.

That gives me an idea. I'll create articles so incorrect that everyone else will get upset and try to fix them all, stimulating a ton of interest.

Except that they might sit around for awhile first, misleading impressionable youngsters and giving HSD a bad reputation. So do at least try to make it accurate. (Being complete and well-written, of course, is more secondary.)

...but sarcasm understood. :P

My delusions of helpfulness have been crushed.

:D

Hope you get some good participation, since my lack of knowledge keeps me from contributing.

Suggestion: I know it's possible to give users "banners" on their profile in phpBB. It's like a graphical title. You could give those who complete the challenge a banner. :)

Good idea, I'll look into that.

Should we claim topics ahead of time, or just race each other for different ones? Also, how will you know who made which article?

I don't anticipate this being a major problem, but if you want to avoid conflicts, you can just edit "[page under construction]" into the page you plan to write. That way, other people will know that someone is already working on that article.

The wiki will let you view a list of each user's contributions, or you can just look at each page's edit history.

I really, really don't have time for it, but it's too tempting. Does it still count if I complete one article Sunday, 0 Monday, 2 Tuesday, 0 Wednesday, 2 Thursday, etc.?

Great stuff so far!

A few points I should mention (these haven't been a huge issue so far, but I figured I should bring them up):

1. Copyright: Short quotes should be fine as long as they're cited in some way, but for copyright reasons, try to avoid copying-and-pasting long passages from other places. (For example, for event rules, the article should contain a paraphrased version and then link to the actual rules.) I very much doubt we'll get in trouble for anything, but it's good to cover our backs. :)

2. Length: We're mainly aiming for "complete" articles, as opposed to stubs with a minimal amount of information. This varies by the subject matter. If you're writing an article about "spreading", for example, you probably don't need more than a few sentences to adequately cover the topic. If you're writing an article about a major publishing company, however, a few sentences probably isn't enough (there's a lot more information people might want to know: major products, company history, affiliated people, etc.) This is fairly subjective, of course, and not really "enforced" per se, but that's the goal.

Keep up the good work! :)

Is three sentences long enough for an article on diaphragmatic breathing?

eh. Probably not. But I'm done with it. :P
