I didn't call my senators (Boxer and Feinstein) because they were both for it, and they never listen to public opinion. It really is hopeless trying to get anywhere with them. And I didn't call my congressman because he was against it already. :)

A LOT of supporters ended up switching after the protests.

One of my senators (Johanns) pulled his support and my representative (Terry) pulled his co-sponsorship.

Rubio flipped to opposing it, and Ryan who was undecided, ended up opposing it.

I emailed all my Congressmen, and one decided to switch his position on it. Course it wasn't because of me specifically, but it was cool knowing I might have been a little part of the reason. :P

Thanks for shutting down HSD, Matt. :) I think that this sort of protest is exactly the kind that will demonstrate what SOPA/PIPA really do, and have the most impact on people. Though they're down for now, I'm sure they'll be back in some form... :/

I was mostly just Irritated that HSD was down. That's where I left it, didn't email my congresswoman or anything. :P

Yes, but you can feel self righteous about being irritated in the service of a good cause :P

The point of the shutdown was just that -- to make you feel irritation. Why? Because that's exactly what SOPA/PIPA could do as well. Except with SOPA/PIPA, HSD might not come back. :)

So you will hate the people who disagree with SOPA. And tell your Congressmen to vote for it just to irritate them back.
Which is what I was that close to doing.

Exactly what I was thinking of doing, good thing it didn't last more than a day.

Yes, I kind of felt this way as well, and it made me sort of support the seizure of MegaUpload's domain and servers, etc.

Semi-related: They're (the gov't) trying again with CISPA.
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/112/hr3523#

It's had a veto threat from Obama, but thought I'd post in case anyone's interested...

Thanks for that information, anorton.

Where does it attempt to regulate piracy?

I don't think this bill is for piracy restriction (therefore, it's just semi-related).

However--this bill gives "whistle-blowers" protection from legal action when they provide information to the gov't:
Quote:
‘(4) EXEMPTION FROM LIABILITY- No civil or criminal cause of action shall lie or be maintained in Federal or State court against a protected entity, self-protected entity, cybersecurity provider, or an officer, employee, or agent of a protected entity, self-protected entity, or cybersecurity provider, acting in good faith--
‘(A) for using cybersecurity systems to identify or obtain cyber threat information or for sharing such information in accordance with this section; or
‘(B) for decisions made based on cyber threat information identified, obtained, or shared under this section.

The bill claims to "protect" personal information, by restricting these documents:
Quote:
‘(4) PROTECTION OF SENSITIVE PERSONAL DOCUMENTS- The Federal Government may not use the following information, containing information that identifies a person, shared with the Federal Government in accordance with subsection (b):
‘(A) Library circulation records.
‘(B) Library patron lists.
‘(C) Book sales records.
‘(D) Book customer lists.
‘(E) Firearms sales records.
‘(F) Tax return records.
‘(G) Educational records.
‘(H) Medical records.

But what's not on this list: credit card accounts, bank statements, etc.

Eh--maybe not as bad as SOPA, but related.
