if an article was written 19 years ago and republished 2 years ago, supplemented with a preface and afterword, which date should be used for the citation? the preface and afterword should obviously be dated to 2010, but is it ok to date the republication to 2010 as well? or should it be 1993? or should the citation say "originally published 1993, republished 2010"?

Check to see if any content in the actual article was changed or edited or expanded. If it was, you should be able to cite it as "updated in 2010."
